The LTDC works to support sustainable tourism through financing and development of infrastructure, promoting tourism experiences, providing opportunities for marketing and creating various employments. The LTDC has been successful in developing the tourist industry in Ladakh region. Leh-Ladakh, the capital of Ladakh is an important and most visited tourist destination. It is one of the oldest and most popular tourist spots. Leh-Ladakh is a mix of high-altitude desert, vast mountain ranges, picturesque landscapes, rolling meadows, ancient monuments, and monasteries. These attractions lay at the heart of the region's unique cultural identity and heritage. Apart from Leh-Ladakh, there are many other places of attractions within Ladakh like Nubra valley, Pangong Lake, Khardung La, Kargil, Tso Moriri etc. Tourism statistics in Ladakh show that the region has grown significantly in recent years and that it is continuing to see a steady growth. According to the Ministry of Tourism India reports in 2018, Ladakh received more than 426,000 tourists. The number of foreign tourists visiting Ladakh increased by 32.8 per cent in 2016-17 and continues to grow at an impressive rate. Tourism in Ladakh is now one of the most important sources of income, with traditional and modern activities contributing to an economic boom in the region. The number of local businesses is increasing as is the number of jobs in the hospitality industry. This has led to improved access to healthcare and education facilities, as well as new opportunities for small and medium enterprises. Impact of tourism in Ladakh has both positive and negative effects. It has successfully improved the livelihoods of the people by providing new job opportunities and bringing in resources for basic needs. However, it has also caused environmental damage due to the lack of waste management systems and has impacted the culture and traditional lifestyles of the local communities. Tourism in Ladakh has to be developed in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible way. Awareness programs and legislation need to be in place to promote responsible tourism and protect the natural and cultural heritage of Ladakh. It is important to promote sustainable tourism initiatives which bring economic growth and job opportunities while protecting the environment.
